Checking your classic motorcycles wheel bearings

One of the most overlooked jobs on a classic motorcycle is checking the wheel bearings.

A bike can look tidy, start first kick and ride well, but worn wheel bearings can affect handling, braking and safety. Many older motorcycles have spent years sitting in sheds, garages or barns, allowing grease to dry out and moisture to creep in.

When inspecting a classic motorcycle, try lifting each wheel off the ground and gently checking for side-to-side play. Spin the wheel and listen for roughness or grinding. Smooth, quiet bearings are a good sign, while any movement or noise deserves a closer look.

It's a simple check that can prevent bigger problems later and is often one of the first jobs worth doing when recommissioning a long-stored motorcycle.

Have you ever found a wheel bearing that was far worse than expected?
