How to free off a stuck clutch after storage

A motorcycle that has been standing for months or years can sometimes surprise you by starting and running perfectly… but refuse to go into gear properly.

One common cause is a clutch that has stuck together during storage. Oil can become gummy and the clutch plates can effectively glue themselves together, especially on motorcycles that haven't been used for a long time.

Before assuming there's a major gearbox problem, it's worth checking whether the clutch is actually releasing. Many classic motorcycles we've imported have suffered from this after years of inactivity.

Sometimes a careful recommissioning process, fresh oil and gentle use can solve the problem. Other times the clutch may need dismantling and inspection.

Have you ever bought a bike that seemed to have gearbox trouble, only to discover it was a stuck clutch?
