Why Fuel Taps Cause More Problems Than People Realise
When a classic motorcycle develops fuel-related problems, many owners immediately suspect the carburettors.
But sometimes the real culprit is much simpler.
The fuel tap is responsible for controlling the flow of petrol from the tank to the carburettor. Over time, old seals can harden, filters can become blocked and internal passages can become restricted by dirt, rust or fuel residue.
The result can be poor running, hesitation at higher speeds, difficult starting or a motorcycle that seems to run out of fuel despite having plenty left in the tank.
A quick inspection of the fuel tap and any built-in filter screens can often reveal problems before hours are spent chasing more complicated faults.
On many long-stored motorcycles, cleaning the fuel tap is one of the first jobs worth doing before attempting to get the engine running again.
Have you ever found a simple fuel tap problem that turned out to be the cause of a much bigger mystery?
