1971 Triumph 650cc Bonneville T120R Project Ref: D1441

1971 Triumph Bonneville T120R 650cc – Project Bike

Historical Context

The 1971 Triumph Bonneville T120R was one of Britain’s best-known sporting motorcycles and belonged to a model line that had been established since the original Bonneville appeared in 1959. Named after the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, the T120 developed a reputation for strong performance, attractive styling and excellent handling. The 1971 model was particularly significant because Triumph introduced a substantially revised chassis using the new oil-in-frame design. The T120R designation was commonly used for the road-going Bonneville, particularly on machines intended for the important American market.

Technical Advancements

The major change for 1971 was Triumph’s adoption of the oil-in-frame chassis, in which the motorcycle’s engine oil was carried within the frame rather than in a separate oil tank. The design was intended to simplify the motorcycle and improve chassis rigidity. The Bonneville retained its proven 649cc unit-construction parallel twin with twin Amal carburettors, giving it the responsive performance and distinctive exhaust note for which the model had become famous.

Evolution of the Model

The Bonneville began in 1959 as Triumph’s high-performance twin-carburettor 650 and developed continuously throughout the 1960s. Unit construction arrived during that decade, followed by numerous improvements to the engine, electrics, suspension and braking. The redesigned 1971 oil-in-frame model marked one of the biggest changes in the T120’s history. The 650cc Bonneville continued into the early 1970s before Triumph increasingly concentrated on the larger 750cc T140 Bonneville.

Competitors in the Market

In 1971, the Bonneville competed with British motorcycles including the Norton Commando 750, BSA A65 Lightning and the three-cylinder Triumph Trident and BSA Rocket 3. It also faced increasingly serious competition from Japanese manufacturers, particularly Honda’s CB750. Despite these newer designs, the Bonneville remained popular for its relatively light weight, responsive handling, strong performance and unmistakable British styling.

Legacy and Appeal

The Triumph Bonneville has become one of the most recognisable names in motorcycle history, and the 1971 T120R represents an important transitional year for the model. As a project bike, this example offers the opportunity to restore a classic 650cc Bonneville from the first year of the oil-in-frame generation. With strong specialist support and good parts availability, the T120R remains a practical restoration project as well as a desirable example of the classic British parallel twin.
