Why Old Engine Oil Should Never Be Trusted
One of the first jobs when recommissioning a long-stored motorcycle should be changing the engine oil.
Many people assume that because a motorcycle has covered very few miles, the oil must still be fine. Unfortunately, time can be just as damaging as mileage.
As oil ages, it can absorb moisture, lose some of its protective qualities and allow contaminants to settle inside the engine. On motorcycles that have been sitting for years, the oil may look acceptable on the dipstick while hiding sludge and deposits elsewhere.
Fresh oil is one of the cheapest forms of insurance you can buy for a classic motorcycle.
Before attempting long journeys or putting a stored bike back into regular use, it's always worth starting with clean oil and a fresh filter where fitted.
A simple oil change can help protect bearings, reduce wear and give you a much better starting point for future maintenance.
