1980 Harley Davidson Shovelhead FXS 80 Kick and Electric start Project Ref: 1637

1980 Harley-Davidson FXS 80 Shovelhead 1340cc – Kick & Electric Start Project

Historical Context

The 1980 Harley-Davidson FXS 80 Low Rider was part of the influential FX family that helped establish Harley-Davidson’s factory-custom style. The original FXS Low Rider had appeared in 1977 with a low seat, raised handlebars, alloy wheels and a stripped-down appearance inspired by customised Harley-Davidsons. By 1980, the model was available with Harley-Davidson’s larger 80 cubic inch Shovelhead V-twin, giving it the combination of strong Big Twin torque and distinctive custom styling that made the Low Rider one of Harley-Davidson’s most important models of the period.

Technical Advancements

The 80 cubic inch Shovelhead represented an increase in capacity over the earlier 74 cubic inch Big Twin and provided additional torque for cruising and everyday riding. The FXS combined this engine with Harley-Davidson’s traditional 4-speed transmission and chain final drive. Having both electric and kick starting provided the convenience of an electric starter while retaining the traditional kick-start arrangement associated with earlier Harley-Davidson Big Twins.

Evolution of the Model

The FX series began with the Super Glide in 1971, combining elements of Harley-Davidson’s FL Big Twins with lighter components and factory-custom styling. The FXS Low Rider arrived in 1977 and quickly became one of the most influential models in the range. Its low stance, cast wheels and custom-inspired appearance established a formula Harley-Davidson would continue to develop for decades. The Shovelhead-powered FX models were eventually succeeded by Evolution-engined motorcycles during the 1980s.

Competitors in the Market

By 1980, Harley-Davidson faced strong competition from large-capacity Japanese motorcycles such as the Honda CB900F, Kawasaki KZ1000, Suzuki GS1000 and Yamaha XS1100. These motorcycles generally offered more cylinders and greater outright performance, but the FXS delivered a very different experience centred around its large-capacity V-twin engine, low-speed torque, distinctive sound and unmistakable American factory-custom appearance.

Legacy and Appeal

The Shovelhead FXS Low Rider has become an important classic Harley-Davidson because of its strong connection with the emergence of the factory-custom motorcycle. As a project, this 1980 example offers the opportunity to preserve or restore a traditional 80ci Shovelhead with the desirable combination of kick and electric starting. Its simple mechanical layout, distinctive period styling and place in the development of the Low Rider make it an appealing motorcycle for enthusiasts of classic American V-twins.
