Launched in 1980, the BMW R80GS created the adventure touring category. With its air-cooled 797 cc boxer twin, long-travel suspension, and monolever rear end, it blended road comfort with genuine off-road capability. The R80G/S Paris-Dakar (PD) variant, introduced in 1984, added a larger 32-litre tank, solo seat with rear rack, and rally-inspired graphics, drawing on BMW’s success in the Paris–Dakar Rally. In the UK, the PD version has become the most sought-after, while standard R80GS models remain popular for their rideability and reliability.
| Condition | Standard R80GS | Paris-Dakar (PD) variant | Example External Source (non-link reference) |

£3,200 – £4,800 | £4,000 – £6,200 | Manor Park Classics – bike auction results; eBay UK completed listings |
| Roadworthy / Presentable Running and MOT’d; older paint, consumables near limit, minor oil weeps; generally usable |
£5,500 – £7,500 | £6,800 – £9,200 | Anglia Car Auctions – motorcycle sales; Collecting Cars – sold listings |
| Restored / Excellent Fully restored or very original; correct finishes; matching numbers; full history |
£8,000 – £10,500 | £9,500 – £13,000 | Bonhams – motorcycle auctions; Pugh’s Auctions – motorcycle results |
Notes: The PD variant consistently commands a 15–25% premium over a comparable standard model. Original tanks, solo seats, racks and PD graphics are vital for top prices. Modified or heavily accessorised bikes can underperform unless period-correct and tastefully done.
In the UK, project-standard R80GS examples typically sell for £3.2–4.8k, while project PD variants command £4–6.2k. Roadworthy standard bikes achieve £5.5–7.5k, and roadworthy PDs bring £6.8–9.2k. Restored or exceptional standard R80GS examples make £8–10.5k, while top-tier PDs can realise £9.5–13k with the correct tank, seat, and history. Collectors prize unmodified PDs with original graphics and full documentation, and these set the high-water mark for the model.
