Harley Davidson Vintage Vin Lookup
Harley-Davidson VIN Information 1930 to
1980
1930 to 1962:
VINs were synonymous with engine numbers, located only on the left case.
VINs had 8 to 10 digits: the first 2 digits were the production year,
followed by 2 to 4 letters for the model designation, and the last 4
digits represented the production number.
Example:
Year: 49
Model: FL
Production Number: 0001
1962 to 1969:
VINs continued as from 1930 to 1962, with a pattern tweak:
For 4-digit production numbers, the first digit alternated
between odd and even to match the production year's parity.
For 5-digit numbers, the first two digits followed the same
odd/even rule.
Example:
Year: 66
Model: FLHB
Production Number: 22001
1970 to 1980:
VINs appeared on both the frame and the engine and matched exactly,
except for a brief period in 1979 (1/9/1979 to 2/7/1979) when factory
changes made VINs differ, which was reverted after law enforcement
concerns.
VINs were 9 digits: first two were the model code, the next five were
the production number (starting above 10,000), and the last two were the
year code.
Example:
Model: 2A
Production Number: 10859
Year Code: H4
